May Newsletter

Hello PSA Members,

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and our May message is ~~ wellness begins with us. In our work, where operations often come first, it's easy to prioritize others while neglecting ourselves.

This month, ask yourself: Am I living the message I share? Am I walking my talk? Take a moment to reconnect, recharge, and remember, we can’t pour from an empty cup. Our wellbeing matters, too.

In our May interview, Kabuki Springs Spa Director, Deanne shares her non-negotiable 30-minute daily ritual of silence and stillness. We love this! It made us reflect on our own wellness routines. Karen is committed to 20–30 minutes on the spin bike most days and reading every morning. Kimberly strives for an hour walk, yoga or gym time 3–5 days a week. Spa Member Robin's secret recipe is saying NO, and getting up early to carve out time for reading, meditating and a facial ritual. Vendor Member Jennifer shared that intentionally choosing partnerships and events that align with her brand is self-care for her.

We’d love to hear how you prioritize self-care and focus on your mental health, so click below to share your thoughts with us! And if it’s been a while since you focused on yourself, consider this a gentle reminder of how important it is. Some days don’t go as planned, but tomorrow is always a new opportunity to begin again.

MAY MEMBER NEWS

Deanne Camarena - Spa Director Kabuki Springs & Spa

Deanne has been with Kabuki Spring & Spa for 25 years, three years as the Spa Director. Her leadership style is rooted in trust, example, and empowerment. She leads by showing and guiding, then giving her team the space to take ownership and grow. Get to know Deanne here.

How did you get started in the spa industry?

Since I was about 8 or 9, I’ve been fascinated by hot springs, a passion sparked by a documentary on Baden-Baden. That early curiosity led me to the spa industry, where I started as a front desk host and quickly felt drawn to learn every aspect of the business. The most rewarding part of my journey has been witnessing the beautiful resurgence of communal bathing as a form of wellness, connection, and care.

How do you practice self-care in your daily routine?

My non-negotiable self-preservation ritual is at least 30 minutes of silence and stillness each day. Whether it’s in the car, at home, or out in nature, this quiet time, usually at the end of the day, helps me reset. It creates a clear boundary between work and home, allowing me to show up more present, grounded, and calm for myself and my family.

What advice would you give to a new Spa Manager getting started in the industry?

There’s so much to learn when it comes to thriving in a management role. True leadership requires a solid understanding of each staff member’s duties, responsibilities, and protocols. Building a cohesive team also means being aware of the challenges and successes across all departments, because effective management comes from empathy, insight, and collaboration.

Have you introduced any new services that have made a great impact?

We've updated our space by turning the former wet room into a non-binary locker room to promote inclusivity and better serve our guests. In line with this change, we introduced a waterless, in-room body scrub that supports both accessibility and sustainability. We're also proud to be San Francisco’s first and only spa certified under the Green Business Program.

Jennifer Tuton Jewelry

How did you get started as a Jewelry Designer?

After three years at a top ad agency, I couldn’t ignore the urge to create. At 25, I quit and started hand-painting barrettes (with toothpicks), and called my first line, “Jenniclips.” That spark grew into a full collection of hair accessories and eventually jewelry. When I moved from Boston to San Francisco in 1998, my jewlery line truly began to take shape.

What has been one of the most rewarding parts of your career?

Every day I pinch myself that I created a career where I get to design and make products that people are drawn to. It brings me great joy! Working for yourself can have many challenges; however I’ve been blessed with being a self motivated, creative, intuitive, energetic person. I love making pieces that have all the quality and style and attention to detail, while still being approachable, affordable, and wearable.

How do you stay creatively inspired?

I love seeing what the big designers are creating. From there I glean styles, colors, shapes, and then add my own flavor. With that being said, I can go on a neighborhood walk and see a blossoming rose bush that evokes something in me and then ignites an idea. The other day I was bombarded by the hues of green, pink, and hints of mocha. Many of my Multigem Waterfall Earrings are inspired by those color combinations. It’s all right there in front us.

What's a fun gem about you that you'd like to share with our membership?

Clients connect with my upbeat vibe as well as my jewelry. I’m a big fan of effortless style, wearing your jewelry not just looking at it, incorporating keepsake gifts from grandparents, or even breathing new life into unworn pieces. I also have a talent for looking at someone and knowing what they would like - an image pops into my head. It’s always fun to see if that awareness is spot on. I love what I do, I love what I create, and I’m incredibly grateful.
